General information about Samos
Samos is the eighth largest island of Greece and has a total surface of 472 km2. Its maximum length measures
apprx. 45 kms and its width about 20 kms.
Samos is located near to the coast of Minor Asia with the shortest distance to Turkey of apprx. 1,2 kms. Samos is the
most eastern situated and the greenest of all Aegean islands.
There are two rather high mountains through Samos, Ambelos and Kerkis. Mount Kerkis with its highest peak "Vigla" of
1.443 m is the highest one of the Aegean Sea. Mount Ambelos, as well called "Karvounis" is of 1.140 m and covers the centre
of the island. Over here from the sea level until 1.000 m height they cultivate the famous Samos Wine.
The island's population is of apprx. 38.000 citizens.
The climate of Samos is mild and during eight months the sun is shining with annual average temperatures between 14-22
degrees Celcius. Lots of natural springs all over the island are the reason for its fertile earth and evergreen landscape.
Therefore, apart from the famous wine, Samos offers as well lots of other agricultural products, such as olives, all kinds
of vegetables, organges, lemons, nuts and almonds.
Samos as the Province of the East Aegean comprehends as well the islands of Fourni and Ikaria. There are as well some
smaller islands near Samos, such as the islands of Kotsika in the North-east and Samiopoula in the South-west.
The most important harbours of Samos are in Samos Town (capital), Karlovasi, Pythagorion and of Ormos Marathokampos.
With its 50% the tourism is the main commercial aspect of Samos. Some other relevant economic goods are the
extraordinary wine and olives/olive oil.
